    Altea
Altea is a character of the Greek mythology – the word means “the one who heals”. In botany the “Althaea officinalis” is a perennial plant belonging to the Malvaceae family with clusters of pale pink
flowers and therapeutic properties. But to us Altea is above all
a textile brand with a famous history and a seal certifying
    quality and elegance.

    company

    philosophy
Altea’s story shows a love for a quality production resulting in the handcrafted care in the realisation of a sartorial product, in the refinement and in the unmistakable taste in the selection of fabrics.
It is a story which Altea is loyal to.
It combines tradition and innovation and succeeds in facing the challenges of the third millennium.

    Altea’s style
After concentrating his production on scarves and ties, with the turn of the century Altea launched the total look in menswear and ladieswear. It’s previous experience represents a plus, Altea’s know-how in printing
fabrics and in combining colours is a fundamental feature defining what marks Altea’s collections: a creative playing in the combination of garments and accessories.

    shop floor
In the age of delocalisation, the decision to keep styling and production in the area is a
decision against the general trend and witnesses a steady link
    with the company tradition
as well as the guarantee of the made in Italy quality.

    the site
A 100 meter linear front facing the new exposition centre of Fiera Milano, a surface of 6000 sq. housing the company headquarters together with the production: the
new Altea factory is the result of
    the ambitious project of the
Sartori brothers, who decided to concentrate in a single place the jobs which were previously located in different areas of Northern Italy.

    history

the shop in via San Paolo
    late 19th century
Milan, 1892. A new tie shop opened on the corner of via Verri and via Montenapoleone, in a part of the city that nearly a century
later came to be the epicentre of
    world fashion...
  • 2/11

    history

    Giuseppe Sartori
    late 19th century
Opened by Giuseppe Sartori, the shop is visited by the most sophisticated fin de siècle milanese clients. The atmosphere is one of understated elegance: dark wood, wax fragrance, tidy shelves.
Tens and tens of boxes and drawers ready to reveal, when opened, the magnificence of
    the most sumptuous fabrics.
  • 3/11

    history

    Giuseppe Sartori
Mister Sartori, a perceptive and enthusiastic man, is a pioneer of italian ties. Devoted to the search for quality and driven by an extraordinary good taste, he soon builds up a loyal clientele to whom
he proposes ties in antique oriental brocades, carefully sewed by hand at the back of the shop.
  • 4/11

    history

    the 1920s
During the 1920s, Felice Sartori returned from the war and following a brief apprenticeship as a salesman for the then well-known tie makers Covi & Bertoli, took over the shop from his father. It was
during this period that he enlarged the tie-making business, including for sale to other shops.
  • 5/11

    history

    the 1930s
The materials chosen were always the finest: the best silks from the weavers of Como, with colours and designs of exclusive quality.
  • 6/11

    history

    Sartori’s shop in Porta Romana
    the 1940s
    The retail business continues
    till the Second World War
    involving Felice’s sons, Celeste
    and Giuseppe Jr.
  • 7/11

    history

    Felice Sartori
The events of the Second World War do not spare the Sartori’s family, which is forced to stop
the retail business. At the end
of the war, Giuseppe Jr succeeds
    in rejoining his family crossing
over from France on foot: the saga goes on.
  • 8/11

    history

    1946: birth of the Altea
    trademark
In 1946 Felice Sartori and his sons set up a company with its business address at via Torquato Tasso 6, Milan, and published their first price list. They also decided to create a trade mark with a distinctive name:
this was the birth of Altea, which was inspired by the plant of the same name with its splendid colours, beneficial effects, and unstoppable growth.
  • 9/11

    history

    Celeste Sartori
    Under the management of
Celeste and Felice Sartori, Altea enjoyed 30 years of strong growth; Celeste opened up the company
to the export sector, which gradually came to represent
more than two thirds of the
total sales volume, whilst Felice took charge of developing the Italian home market.
  • 10/11

    history

    Celeste Sartori
    In 1973 the new company
head office at Via Bandello 8 is inaugurated. At the end of the 1980s the fourth generation takes over at the helm when Celeste’s sons, Luca and Michele Sartori,
join the firm: the passion for silk runs in the family.
  • 11/11

    Altea today
Nowadays Altea is a dynamic and solid company successfully operating in a highly competitive market: a well-organized and flexible structure dealing with 3500 customers worldwide.

    Milan
Via Maffei on the corner with via Clusone, one of the focal points of the fashion world in Milan.
A building belonging to the industrial archaeology of the city: wide glass-walls, layered roofs, brick fronts. This space, which
until recently used to house a prestigious design gallery, has been selected by Altea as its
new home, a place where ideas and products of the company
    meet their public.
